Public Education

Forward Steps Mobility is passionate about educating the public around blindness and low vision.

We provide professional workshops as well as engaging media related opportunities. Our educational opportunities focus on the positive image of people who are blind or have low vision, as fully participating and capable members of society.

Education alters social misperceptions, changes paradigms, debunks fallacies, and challenges stereotypical thinking.

As Helen Keller once said, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision”.

Our public education sessions vary from professional development, to TAFE lectures in disability studies, allied health workshops, upskilling Support Workers, and running school-based educational talks.

Q. Do you know the most common forms of blindness?
Q. Did you know there is actually specialised technique training in using a white cane?
Q. Have you ever heard the term ‘legally blind’ used before?
Q. Do you wonder how someone who is totally blind can
access the community independently?

Forward Steps Mobility loves to demystify the publics’ notions about blindness and low vision. We include experiential blindfold opportunities and cover interesting as well as helpful points of consideration when interacting with someone who experiences blindness or low vision.

Our practical educational training also covers aspects around human guide techniques, white cane equipment, simulator glasses, as well as meeting people who have the lived experience of blindness and low vision, and much more. We have a fun, informative and interactive approach to educational learning.

Please contact us to discuss our educational programs.
